WASHINGTON: The US Senators has expressed the desire to forge a strong and lasting partnership between the United States and Pakistan.

It came when the Chief of the Army Chief (COAS) General Raheel Sharif held meetings with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senate Armed Services Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence, Radio Pakistan reported citing the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The meeting which was also attended by the US Senator John McCain, a member of both Foreign Relations and the Armed Services Committees, held a discussion on overall security situation in the region and matters relating to Afghanistan.

The ISPR said that the committee acknowledged that due to the successful operations of the Pakistani security forces, militants’ command and control infrastructure had been destroyed in North Waziristan.

The COAS expressed Pakistan’s resolve to continue this operation till elimination of the last terrorist. He also underlined that Pakistan military was confident to hold their gains in FATA to ensure that terrorists are not able to return or establish their operational basis on the Pakistani soil.

The army chief also briefed the Senators about Pakistan’s plans to rehabilitate the dislocated people from Waziristan at the earliest possible.

Earlier, Chair of the Select Intelligence Committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein along with other key members exchanged views with General Raheel Sharif and his delegation.

Both sides discussed a range of issues in bilateral security cooperation and expressed a strong desire to continue and intensify this partnership in the coming months.
