WASHINGTON: The United States may impose financial sanctions against the Ukrainian authorities and protest leaders if the violence continues in the country.
A foreign news agency citing its source in the US Congress, reported that sanctions were discussed with administration officials, and final details will be worked out in the nearest future.
On Wednesday, the Russian Parliament’s upper house, the Council of the Federation, also voiced concern over the current situation in the eastern European country.
However, the US lawmakers and Obama administration officials said that they were encouraged by recent developments including the Ukrainian parliament’s vote to cancel some controversial anti-protest laws.
The State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the US has been willing to consider sanctions but no decision has been made.
