US drone strikes in FATA reduced significantly: UN

GENEVA: The United Nations has said that a significant reduction has been witnessed in the US drone strikes in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

In a report submitted by UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counterterrorism Ben Emmerson in Geneva, it was stated that 27 drone attacks took place in FATA last year as compare to 128 in 2010, while no drone strike has taken place in tribal areas so far in 2014.

However‚ it said that US drone strikes have increased in Afghanistan and Yemen and civilian deaths resulting from these strikes are intensifying in Afghanistan.

It said that in Afghanistan at least 45 civilians were killed and 14 injured in US drone strikes in 2013, triple the rate experienced in 2012.
