UNSC supports Syrian cease-fire brokered by Russia and Turkey

UNITED NATIONS, The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution number 2336 for supporting Syrian cease-fire arrangement brokered by Russia and Turkey.

UN resolution number 2336 also appreciated new peace talks plan among Syrian conflict parties to end six years of civil war that killed over 300,000 people and displaced over 12 million Syrians. Talks will be held in Astana which is the capital city of Kazakhstan.

The 15-nation council “welcomes and supports the efforts by Russia and Turkey to end violence in Syria and jumpstart a political process,” and looks forward to the Astana meeting, which it called “an important step” ahead of the resumption of negotiations under UN auspices in Geneva.

Right now Security Council comprises of five permanent members including China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States.

While ten non-permanent members include Bolivia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Senegal, Sweden, Ukraine and Uruguay.

It may be mentioned that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed to hold Syrian peace negotiations in Astana and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev expressed his readiness to host talks after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.

“Kazakhstan is ready to host all sides for talks in Astana”, said President of Kazakhstan Nazarbayev. It may be mentioned that Kazakhstan being a non-permanent member of UNSC played a pivotal role for drafting resolution number 2336.
