EuropeUK's Labour Party suspends Lord Nazir Ahmed over alleged anti-Jewish remarks

LONDON: The Labour Party has suspended its Pakistani-origin peer Lord Nazir Ahmed as it carried out an investigation into allegations that he blamed a Jewish conspiracy for his imprisonment he suffered a couple of years ago for dangerous driving.

Lord Ahmed spent 12 weeks in Jail for dangerous driving in 2009 after sending and receiving text messages shortly before his car was involved in a fatal crash.

The Muslim peer has now allegedly blamed that he was convicted and imprisoned due to the pressure placed on the courts by Jews “who own newspapers and TV channels”.

He is alleged to have told an Urdu-language broadcast in Pakistan that the judge who sentenced him to 12-week imprisonment was appointed to the High Court after helping a “Jewish colleague” of Tony Blair during an important case.

After his remarks published in The Times and the party launched an investigation, a Labour spokesman said: “The Labour Party deplores and does not tolerate any sort of anti-Semitism. Following reports in The Times today we are suspending Lord Ahmed pending an investigation.”

Lord Nazir was also suspended by the party last year for allegedly offering a £10m bounty for the capture of US president Barack Obama – which he denied.
