Sri Lankan cricket team to tour Pakistan in September: sources

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Sri Lankan Cricket team is likely to tour Pakistan in the second week of September this year after a successful and historic Pakistan-Zimbabwe cricket series.

The sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told media that the PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan held a meeting with the Sri Lankan Cricket Interim-Committee Chief Sidath Wettimuny as part of efforts to convince him to send their team to Pakistan.

Earlier on Saturday, Sidath Wettimuny and a member of the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim-Committee Prasanna Jayawardene met Shaharyar Khan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The PCB had invited the two-member Sri Lanka Cricket delegation to visit Pakistan and watch the third and final One-day International (ODI) between Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

The delegation during its stay in Lahore also watched the security arrangements made for the Zimbabwe team.

“I am happy to see international cricket being played in Pakistan and I am hopeful it will help change perception about the security situation and the security plan of the PCB to the rest of the boards,” Wettimuny said.

“I am just amazed at the response of the Pakistani people to this series and their enthusiasm has convinced me that Sri Lanka has to give more support to Pakistan cricket.”

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean Cricket team on Monday left Lahore for home after completing its historic tour.

The Zimbabwe team became the first full-member International Cricket Council (ICC) team to visit Pakistan after March 2009 when the Sri Lankan Cricket team was attacked in Lahore which eventually caused Pakistan’s isolation from the international cricket for six years.

The visiting side played two T20 internationals and three ODI matches against Pakistan at the Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore from May 22 to May 31.
