KARACHI: The Sindh government on Thursday banned the issuance of new arms licenses in the province with immediate effect.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Provincial Chief Secretary Ejaz Chaudhry in Karachi on Thursday, during which the provincial government also decided to run a drive against illegal weapons and summoned the record of arms sold during the last five years for scrutiny.

The meeting directed those possessing illicit arms weapons to surrender them to the concerned up to October 11 to Deputy Commissioners or police stations.

It warned that those possessing illegal weapons after this date will have to face life imprisonment and forfeiture of their property.

Rangers and police have seized huge caches of illegal arms and ammunition during the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi.
