PakistanSindh Assembly to endorse special powers for Rangers

KARACHI, Pakistan: Sindh Assembly session has been called for Thursday procuring a legal endorsement to extension in the special powers of the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), said Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the Sindh Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs.

Talking to media Tuesday during a seminar organized by Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre, he said that since assembly has not be in session for quite some time therefore the summary with regard to extension in special powers to the Rangers could not be signed by the Chief Minister of the province.

In reply to a question, the minister said provincial government was not in any way against the presence of the Rangers or the powers enjoyed by them, however, a constitutional cover is needed to be given to the process by the provincial assembly.

“It will be in two days time that the issue will be settled following needed deliberations on the floor of the house,” said the senior minister.

He said Sindh government was absolutely committed to the cause of law and order for which optimum security would be provided to the masses.

To another query, he said it was on the request of the provincial government, following consensus opinion of all other political parties in the province, that Rangers were called for the support of Police.

Karachi operation will be continued till the last terrorist exists and all needed support would be extended to the law enforcers, including Rangers, as they have helped elimination of extortion, abduction and target killing to a great deal, said the senior minister of Sindh.

Khuhro said peaceful LB polls in the metropolis was a proof of the government commitment towards the cause of peace while during undemocratic regime incidents of May 12, October 18 Nishter Park Tragedy continue to haunt people till date.

To another question, he said Mayorship of Karachi was the right of the party having maximum seats in the UCs.
