SportsShoaib Malik announces retirement from Test cricket

SHARJAH: The right-hand Pakistani middle order batsman Shoaib Malik has announced to retire form the Test cricket, after he could not make any impact in his last five innings against England.

His announcement came after third day’s play of the final Test match between Pakistan and England ended at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, saying that the “time was right” to move on.

The 33-year-old all-rounder represented Pakistan in 34 Test matches and scored 1860 with an average of 35.76. He also took 25 wickets with best bowling figure as 4 for 33.

The batsman made his test match debut against Bangladesh at the Multan Cricket Stadium in August 2001.

Shoaib Malik recently made his maiden doubly century when he scored 245 runs in first innings of the first Test match against England at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. It was his first Test inning after he made a comeback to the team after a gap of five years.

However, later he could not perform well and even only once he entered into a double figure. The score of his last five consecutive Test innings remained as 0, 2, 7, 38 and 0.

By and large, Shoaib Malik scored three centuries and 9 fifties in his 58 Test innings. His first two centuries were against Sri Lanka in 2006 and 2009 at the same venue, Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.
