RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: An accountability court in Rawalpindi on Friday acquitted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and members of the Sharif family in Ittefaq Foundry, Hudaibiya Paper Mills and Raiwind corruption references.
During a hearing at the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court, the judge Justice Anwar Ahmed termed the charges politically motivated while clearing the Sharif family of all charges pertaining to money laundering and illegal assets.
Others accused in the case included Nawaz’s brother Abbas Sharif, Hussain Nawaz, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shahbaz and Kalsoom Nawaz.
The references were filed with the Attock NAB court in March 2000 and have been pending in the accountability court in Rawalpindi.
