ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Senate on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution strongly condemning the genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

The resolution was moved by the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed in the Upper House which resumed its session in Islamabad on Tuesday afternoon with Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani in the chair.

The resolution said that Rohingya Muslims are being denied their natural right of residing in a country where they have been living for centuries.

It also called upon the government of Pakistan to immediately take matter with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and request him to appoint his envoy for the Rohingya Muslims so that their lives and livelihood be protected and human rights safeguarded.

Nawaz Sharif approves $5m assistance for Rohingya Muslims

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved all the recommendations of the special committee about plight of Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar including $5 million assistance.

It has been decided to increase diplomatic and moral pressure to highlight plight of Rohingya Muslims.

The prime minister would also be writing a letter to the UN Chief drawing his attention to the issue.

On June 6, the prime minister constituted a three-member special committee comprising the Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi to suggest measures and relief efforts for Rohingya Muslims.
