ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday ordered provincial governments to conduct local bodies elections immediately or submit a written reply stating that they can’t do otherwise.
A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case on Tuesday.
During the course of hearing, the chief justice remarked that the provincial governments will not get a date of their choice to hold local bodies elections.
Additional Attorney General told the court that they will submit the written reply on which the chef justice said martial law government was better, at least they hold the local bodies elections.
The chief justice said that courts always support democracy and verified the martial law after imposition, adding that martial law effects the government not judiciary.
“There is continuity of same governments in Punjab and Sindh. Tell us why provincial governments are not holding elections?” the chief justice asked.
