CrimeSC orders Haqqani to appear within 4 weeks in memogate case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Tuesday ordered the federal government to bring Pakistan’s former envoy to US Hussain Haqqani back to the country within four weeks as per the rules set by the Constitution.

A nine-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took up petitions filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif and ten others over the memogate scandal, asking for action against those responsible.

The petition sought court directions for the respondents to explain the memo.

During the hearing, Justice Asif Khosa said that Haqqani should appear before the court or the federal government can proceed with the trial on the basis of references provided by the commission.

Haqqani, the prime character of the memogate case, said that his opponents have come in power, but his argument was rejected by the court.

The CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that only law will have power over everything, it doesn’t matter whether someone is president or prime minister.
