ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday declared the disbursement of Rs47 billion developmental funds by former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in his own constituency and directed to initiate civil and criminal proceedings against those involved including the ex-PM in the development projects.

Ashraf had issued Rs47 billion for developmental schemes underway at his hometown Gujar Khan area of Punjab province during the final days of his tenure as PM.

A three-member bench of apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry announced the verdict in development projects case on Thursday.

In its verdict, the apex court declared the fund transfer as illegal, saying that the amount was disbursed against the law and legal procedures.

It said that irregularities were found in the transfer of funds and that the former prime minister misused his powers while issuing Rs47 billions for uplift schemes of his hometown.

The apex court ordered authorities concerned to take action against the former premier.
