ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday begun hearing of its suo moto notice on a taxi driver’s killing in Rangers’ firing at Karachi.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is hearing the case.

Attorney General of Pakistan Munir A.Malik and Director General Sindh Rangers were summoned by the court.

In his initial remarks, the CJP said that negligence was committed in this incident, similar to the murder of Karachi’s Sarfaraz Shah who was also killed by the Rangers at point-blank.

Mureed, a taxi driver and lone earner for his family, was killed in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area when a Rangers man fired multiple shots at him for not stopping the vehicle.

Reports said the Rangers personnel beckoned to stop the taxi-driver, who was on way along with his wife and son to take edibles for iftar; but, the Rangers, finding no compliance, opened fire that killed the driver on the spot.

On Thursday, the main accused Lance Naik Ghulam Rasool was remanded into police custody. Investigators say that three other personnel booked in the FIR were at large.

On the other hand, the driver’s widow lodged a murder case against the Rangers personnel, claiming that his husband was murdered in indiscriminate firing and that Rangers pulled him out of the taxi and gunned down.
