Sartaj Aziz represents Pakistan at SAARC council of ministers meeting

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Prime Minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz is representing Pakistan at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Council of Ministers Meeting being held in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The meeting will finalize agenda for the two-day SAARC Summit beginning on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry represented Pakistan at the 41st Session of SAARC Standing Committee which reviewed the progress of SAARC activities and prepared recommendations for today’s Council of Ministers meeting.

The Standing Committee also finalized draft Declaration to be submitted to the Leaders.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Foreign Secretary held meetings with the Secretary General of SAARC as well as the Foreign Secretaries of Nepal and Maldives.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has left for Nepal to represent Pakistan at the 18th SAARC Summit being held in Kathmandu on November 26-27 with its theme “Deeper Integration for Peace and Prosperity”.

“Pakistan attaches high importance to SAARC and is committed to the SAARC process,” the foreign office said.

“Pakistan firmly believes that given the resources, SAARC region has the potential to become the engine for global economic growth for the 21st century,” it added.

On the sidelines of the event, the prime minister will meet other leaders of SAARC countries to discuss issues of bilateral and regional interest, the foreign office said.
