PakistanRaza Rabbani rules out presidential form of government in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani Monday said there was no room for presidential form of the government in Pakistan adding that the system has already been failed.

Addressing to the participants of 1st batch of Senate Internship Programme here, he said,” the people has also rejected the presidential form of the government and he is not ready to accept abrogated 1962 constitution as a constitution”.

He said hundred of thousands people had rendered sacrifices for strengthening of democracy, rule of law and against the dictatorship.

Rabbani said there should be monument in the parliament in memory of those who scarified their lives in struggling for democracy and rule of law in the country.

“The country’s constitution envisage parliamentary form of government which guarantee provincial autonomy,” he said.

Raza Rabbani said those elements would be held responsible in case they attempted to mingle with the constitution or provincial autonomy.

He feared that the federation could afford more of such experiments.

The Chairman said that the constitution was not mere a gift to the nation rather it came after long struggle, sacrifice and pains.

He stressed the need to bridge the gap between the youth and the parliament.

He said the internship programme would not only help the youth to make the performance of various standing committees but also help them to observe how the parliament functioned. “The parliament can function smoothly unless it has people ownership,” he said.

He said in first phase 46 students of eight universities of the capital were selected for the internship. A memorandum of understanding was also being signed with SZABIST University and in next batch students from the university would also be a part of the internship.

Earlier, speaking on the occasion, leader of the house in Senate, Raja Zafarul Haq appreciated the chairman for taking such revolutionary step.

He said that host of challenges were confronted to the country and the role of parliament was very crucial in addressing the peoples’ problems.

Secretary Senate Amjad Pervaiz Malik also spoke on the occasion.
