Political leaders meet to discuss next Senate Chairman

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: An important meeting of heads of all political parties will be held in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss matters relating to the election of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman.

The luncheon meeting is being held at the invitation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

It is likely that the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman will have a one on one meeting with the prime minister on the issue.

Earlier, the federal minister for information Pervaiz Rasheed said while talking to a private news channel that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would finalize the names of candidates for Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Senate in consultation with all political parties.

The information minister said that the names in this regard will be decided by Tuesday. He said that the government is in contact with all the political parties, including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to reach consensus on this count.

Opposition parties nominate Raza Rabbani for top Senate post

On Monday, the opposition parties nominated the PPP senior leader and Senator Raza Rabbani as their candidate for the post of Chairman Senate.

In this regard, a decision was made by the Awami National Party (ANP) Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan while talking to newsmen after a meeting of leaders of PPP, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and the ANP in Islamabad.

The ANP leader said that the Deputy Chairman Senate would be nominated from Balochistan.
