ISLAMABAD: The meeting will discuss issues of militancy and security with the special reference to drone attacks.
Responding to points raised by different members in the National Assembly on Thursday‚ the Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan said the incumbent government has taken a clear stance on November 3 acts of the former President Pervez Musharraf and also took the House into confidence on the matter.
The Interior Minister said that according to the judgment of 14- member bench of the Supreme Court‚ only one person is responsible for the November 3 acts. He regretted that Pervez Musharraf is now dragging the institution of army into this whole affair. He‚ however‚ said that we have all the respect for Pakistan Army whose personnel are rendering great sacrifices in the war against terrorism. He said there will be no blot on the face and image of Pakistan Army due to the initiation of inquiry against Pervez Musharraf.
The Interior Minister said a meeting of the parliamentary leaders will be held next month to discuss the issues of militancy and security with particular reference to drone strikes. The meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will also be attended by the Chief of Army Staff as well as senior officials of intelligence agencies in order to formulate a consensus policy.
On the situation in Karachi‚ the Interior Minister said the government will take into confidence all the political parties to improve the law and order situation in the provincial metropolis. He said he will visit Karachi next month and meet with the Governor‚ the Chief Minister and political parties there.
He said the federal government will provide all possible assistance to the provincial government of Sindh to improve the situation in Karachi. He said that the provincial assembly of Sindh should hold its session and formulate a consensus policy on Karachi situation. Speaking on a point of order‚ Chief of Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman voiced concerns over recent wave of terrorism in the country.
He said practical steps are required to address the root causes of terrorism and extremism. He said the federal government should formulate a policy on the issue after taking on board the provincial governments.
