FAISALABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday vowed to eliminate electricity and gas theft and said those involved in the crime would not be spared.

Speaking at a briefing during his visit to a textile mill in Faisalabad on Monday afternoon, the Prime Minister said corruption and line losses are among the major causes of the power crisis and the government is determined to tackle the problem.

The Prime Minister said theft of electricity takes place with the connivance of officials of the department and urged businessmen to help check the practice.

Sharif said the electricity distribution system is also worn out and results into significant losses.

The Prime Minister said the government is introducing revolutionary changes in the power sector to provide maximum relief to consumers in minimum timeframe. He said all sources of energy especially hydel‚ solar and coal are being exploited to over the shortages.

Nawaz Sharif‚ however‚ said it was unfair to expect reformation of the collapsed system just within one month. He expressed the confidence that the load-shedding would be eliminated during tenure of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government.

The Prime Minister regretted that past governments did not pay heed to the need of reforms in the power sector and as a result we are today talking about ways and means to overcome energy crisis instead of talking about increased production‚ exports and provision of employment opportunities to people.
