KARACHI, Pakistan: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday performed the groundbreaking of the long-awaited Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project worth Rs 20.7 billion which will not only provide affordable transport facility to about half a million Karachities daily but will also reduce our collective carbon footprint.

In line with the vision of the federal government to modernize the public transport in Karachi, the Circular Railway is not only being rehabilitated but also being expanded and modernized.

The 30 stations of the modern Circular Railway will link residential, industrial, and office areas, which will not only reduce the flow of traffic in Karachi but also facilitate the passengers.

According to the Spokesperson of Pakistan Railways, the 29-kilometer track of KCR will be built without crossings on which trains would run at the speed of 80 kilometers per hour while each train would have the capacity of 814 passengers.

In his address at the groundbreaking ceremony held at Karachi Cantt Railway Station, the prime minister said that the federal government is fully committed for the timely completion of the KCR project, and we expect the Sindh government to work jointly with us to fix the issues pertaining to clear all hindrances.

The prime minister emphasized that federal and provincial governments will have to work jointly to address issues of Karachi.

The prime minister said that Karachi is economic hub of the Country and we have to design more projects for the City to cope with growing population and transport issues.

Furthermore, he said that the Bundle Island has a huge potential to attract foreign investment. He said that i would urge the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and the provincial government to review its decision as it will pave the way of prosperity in Karachi and Sindh
