Peace talks: Govt, Taliban committees to meet today or tomorrow

PESHAWAR: The coordinator of the negotiation committee of the Taliban Maulana Yousuf Shah has said that the meeting between the government and the Taliban committees would be held today or tomorrow to take up some very important matters including the release of prisoners.

Taking to media, Shah said that there was not deadlock in the peace talks. He said that when some people were talking about deadlock, we remained in contact with each other.

Shah further said besides the government committee, he was in contact with the Taliban also.

On Sunday, the federal minister for interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told media that the government had held consultations with the army over the issue of freeing Taliban prisoners.

The interior minister said that the government wanted the immediate release of non-combatants held captive by the Taliban and added that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had not demanded the release of militant’s and neither would they be freed.

Nisar said that the release of combatant prisoners would take place at a later stage, adding that the holding of talks with the Taliban, which had entered its third stage, was a difficult task.

The interior minister further said that there was no deadlock between the Taliban and the government.
