Pakistan wants early implementation of TAPI gas pipeline project: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has stressed the need for early implementation of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, saying it is very important for the regional countries.

The 1,680 km pipeline project backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) would bring 3.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

In a high-level meeting held in Islamabad on Wednesday, the prime minister said that Pakistan will play positive role for early progress on TAPI gas pipeline project.

The prime minister said that Pakistan is facing acute shortage of gas and that the TAPI project will help Pakistan to overcome gas shortage.

“We all should take this opportunity seriously so that we can fulfill our obligation to our peoples,” Nawaz Sharif said.

Sharif emphasised that concerned states should take all steps necessary to start the project as soon as possible keeping in view the increase in cost with time.

The meeting was attended by Turkmenistan Director State Agency for Management and Use of Hydrocarbon Resource Yagshgeldi Kakayev, Afghanistan Minister of Mines and Petroleum Daoudshah Saba, India Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, Director General Asian Development Bank Manila Klaus Gerhaeusser and others.
