Pakistan, UK vow to enhance defence, economic cooperation

LONDON: Pakistan and the United Kingdom have vowed to expand bilateral cooperation in defence, economy, health and education sectors.

A joint statement issued after the meeting of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his British counterpart David Cameron in London said that both the sides renewed their commitment to increase bilateral trade to three billion pounds next year.

The United Kingdom agreed to help improve the business environment and increase investment in Pakistan. It also agreed to support Pakistan’s implementation of critical economic reforms to improve Pakistan’s trade competitiveness, particularly in reducing trade barriers between Pakistan and its neighbours.

The UK and Pakistan agreed to exchange expertise and business dialogue on energy.

Both the governments reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate against terrorism, organised crime and illegal migration.

They also agreed to open a new British Deputy High Commission in Lahore.
