Pakistan to send troops to Saudi Arabia to join coalition against Yemen rebels

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan has decided to send troops to Saudi Arabia to join coalition against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to media reports.

In addition, a high-level delegation led by the Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and comprising the Prime Minister’s Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and other military officials will visit the Kingdom on Tuesday to meet the Saudi defence officials.

The sources said that the delegation will ask Saudi Arabia about its needs as Pakistan has agreed to provide military assistance to Riyadh.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assured the Saudi king Shah Salman bin Abdul Aziz of Pakistan’s all out support.

In a telephonic conversation held with the Saudi King, the prime minister discussed the issues of mutual interest and regional situation, and assured him of Pakistan’s support.

Pakistan seeks political solution of crisis in Yemen

Meanwhile, Pakistan called upon the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the international community to play a constructive role in finding a political solution of the Yemen crisis.

It occurred in a high-level meeting held in Islamabad on Monday under the chairmanship of the prime minister to undertake a comprehensive review of the prevailing situation in the Middle East.

The meeting, which was attended by the defence minister, the prime minister’s advisor on national security and foreign affairs, the Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, the Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman and the Foreign Secretary.

“Pakistan remains firmly committed to supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan,” the meeting concluded.

It was emphasized that Pakistan stands committed to playing a meaningful role in arresting the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.

In the same context, and to facilitate early resolution of the crisis and to promote peace and unity of the Muslim Community, the prime minister would be contacting the leadership of brotherly countries.
