Pakistan to host 36th session of D-8 Commission on June 4-5: FO

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan will host the 36th session of the D-8 Commission on June 4-5 in Islamabad, a multilateral grouping of eight emerging economies of the Muslim world representing different regions.

In a press release issued by the Foreign Office in Islamabad on Tuesday, it was told that the meeting of the commission will be inaugurated by Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi.

It will be attended by commissioners of D-8 member states and the D-8 Secretary-General Dr Seyed Ali Muhammad Mousavi.

The foreign office said that the meeting is being organized during the extended term of Pakistan’s chairmanship of the organization. It said that previously, Pakistan has organized four meetings of the D-8 Commission during 2012 – 2014 in addition to two ministerial and one Summit meeting.

The D-8 Commissioners from member countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey will take stock of progress made in five priority areas namely trade, industry, agriculture, transportation and energy.

The foreign office said that the meeting will also consider recommendations made by the D-8 eminent persons group for making the organization more effective.

The meeting has also on its agenda issues including the next meeting of D-8 leaders and foreign ministers in addition to D-8’s external relations with the United Nations agencies following the grant of observer status to the organization at the UN.
