ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid Thursday said Pakistan was conscious of its obligations to tackle environmental issues after the Paris agreement.

“Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has directed the ministry to develop a comprehensive plan to effectively combat climate change,” he said while talking to a delegation of the Agence Francaise De Department (AFD) who called on him here.

The delegation was comprising of head of Asia Department AFD Paris Office Pascal Pacaut, Country Director AFD Pakistan Office Jacky Amprou, Regional Coordinator for Pakistan and Afghanistan Frederic Contin and Team Leader AFD Pakistan Office Nauman Bhutta, said a press release.

Zahid Hamid apprised the delegation that Pakistan’s position in the ranking of worst climate change hit countries in last 20 had improved, adding that it had gone to number 8 from 10.

“We are planning to bring legislation changes and adaptation plans to combat climate change. Pakistan is first country to have its parliament on solar energy,” he said.

He said Pakistan was also planning to get reliable estimates through expert studies to know it stood in carbon emissions.

During the meeting, both the sides agreed to cooperate and invest for countering climate change issues effectively.

AFID is a public developing bank owned by the French government in incharge of funding and implementing development projects in Pakistan.

Its mandate is to fully focus on energy sector including renewable energy and energy efficiency.

AFD is committed to support green energy in Pakistan which will contribute to the reduction of the energy crisis.
