North AmericaPakistan calls for end to US drone strikes in tribal areas

NEW YORK: Pakistan has called for an end to US drone strikes in its tribal areas, saying that drone strikes violated international law‚ including international humanitarian law‚ and were also detrimental to collective efforts to fight terrorism.

Speaking at a high level meeting at UN Security Council, Prime Minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said that drone strikes cause deaths of civilians‚ including women and children.

Aziz said that drone strikes have a serious impact on psycho-social health of children. He also underscored the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach in addressing issues related to small arms and light weapons.

The advisor called for a more active role of the UN Security Council in resolution of outstanding disputes.
