Pakistan assures full security to journalists

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal government has assured full safety and security to journalists in Pakistan, a country which ranks worryingly high when it comes to the number of attacks on journalists.

In a meeting of ministerial committee constituted by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to address security related issues of media houses, the federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed said that safety and security of journalists is priority of the government.

The information minister said that the government will resolve all problems of working journalists including any threat to their life and property.

The minister said that the government considers media as an important instrument for strengthening democracy and would continue to facilitate it in performance of their professional obligations.

Last year, Pakistan was believed to be the most dangerous country for journalists in the world with 14 journalists killed across the country.

In a report issued in January 2015 by Freedom Network, a Pakistani media rights watchdog, it was stated that 14 persons including eight journalists and six media workers lost their lives in various violent incidents across Pakistan in 2014.
