Pakistan and Uzbekistan work to enhance of inter-parliamentary relations

Islamabad, Pakistan: Pakistan and Uzbekistan will continue to work for further development of inter-parliamentary relations, enhancement of contacts and cooperation between the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and the Parliament of Pakistan

This decision was taken in a meeting of Uzbek Ambassador in Pakistan Furqat Sidiqov with Speaker of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Sardar Ayaz Sadiq here on Tuesday.

During the meeting, two sides discussed current issues of the bilateral agenda, including the importance of further development of inter-parliamentary relations, enhancement of contacts and cooperation between the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and the Parliament of Pakistan to strengthen people to people and business to business contacts.

It may be mentioned Oliy Majlis the Supreme Assembly or one can call the Parliament of Uzbekistan. It succeeded the Supreme Soviet in 1995, and was unicameral until a reform implemented in January 2005 created a second chamber.

The Legislative Chamber has 150 deputies elected from territorial constituencies. The Senate has 100 members, 84 elected from the regions, from the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan and from the capital, Tashkent, and an additional 16 nominated by the President of Uzbekistan. Both houses have five-year terms.

National Assembly of Pakistan is the sovereign legislative body and makes laws for the Federation in respect of the powers enumerated in the Federal Legislative list. It keeps check over Executive system and ensures that the government functions within the parameters set out in the Constitution and does not violate the fundamental rights of citizens.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a Federal State comprising four provinces of Balochistan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Punjab and Sindh; Islamabad is the Federal Capital with Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). These federating units offer a lot of diversity and variety in terms of languages, levels of social and economic development, population density and climatic conditions.

The Members of the National Assembly are to be elected by direct and free vote in accordance with law.
