RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to evolve a robust and effective bilateral border coordination mechanism, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

The understanding came at a meeting between an eight-member Afghan military delegation and the Pakistani military delegation at the Army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

The Afghan military delegation was led by Major General Afzal Aman, the Director General Military Operation (DGMO) with representatives from the Afghan National Security Council (NSC), Afghan military intelligence and Afghan border police while the Pakistani side was headed by Major General Aamer Riaz, the DGMO Pakistan Army.

The ISPR said that during the meeting a detailed briefing was given on border coordination mechanism.

It said that the issue of terrorists sanctuaries in Kunar and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan and attack on Pakistani border village and posts from those sanctuaries came under discussion. The issue of cross border shelling also came under discussion during the meeting.

The Afghan delegation was told that Pakistan only fires back in self defence when Pakistani border posts are physically attacked or fired upon by terrorists from the Afghan territory and no indiscriminate firing is carried out.

The both sides agreed to build further trust, continue to talk under all circumstances and evolve a robust and effective bilateral border coordination mechanism. They also agreed to meet next meeting for which scheduled is being finalized.
