Pak-India foreign secretary level talks underway in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The foreign secretary level talks between Pakistan and India are underway at the foreign office in Islamabad on Tuesday.

It comes after the Indian external affairs secretary Subramanium Jaishankar arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a two-day visit to resume stalled dialogue process between the two neighboring countries.

During the talks, the Indian foreign secretary and his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry are holding discussion on bilateral relations and matters pertaining to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

The two sides are expected to discuss outstanding disputes including Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen and Sir Creek.

The Indian foreign secretary is also expected to call on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif besides holding meetings with the prime minister’s adviser on foreign affairs and national security Sartaj Aziz and the prime minister’s special assistant Tariq Fatimi.

Earlier upon his arrival, Subramanium Jaishankar was received by senior officials of the Foreign Office and the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

The Foreign Office said that the visit of Indian external affairs secretary is part of his trip to the SAARC member countries but all issues between Pakistan and India would be discussed.

The foreign secretary level talks were to be held between the two neighboring countries on August 25 last year but the Indian government unilaterally called off the talks after the Pakistani high commissioner to India Abdul Basit met separatist leaders from Kashmir in New Delhi just before the scheduled dialogue.
