North AmericaOpposition divided over blockage of NATO supply

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have opposed the blockage of supply lines to NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The parliamentary leaders of the opposition parties in the National Assembly held a meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday to hold consultations over the situation that emerged following US drone strikes that killed Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud in North Waziristan tribal region.

However, they emerged divided over what should be Pakistan’s response to the missile strike.

During the meeting, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Awami Muslim League (AML) and Jamaat-e-Islam demanded that the transit route through Pakistan be cut in response to the missile strike.

But the PPP, a major opposition party in lower house of the Parliament, the ANP and the MQM opposed the blockage of NATO supply to Afghanistan.

The PPP, ANP and MQM leaders were of the view that the government should carry on the negotiation process without blocking the NATO supply.

The meeting decided to continue to hold consultations over the situation.

The parliamentary leaders of the opposition parties also demanded of the government to apprise them over the future plan about the dialogue process.
