Obama vows to veto any new bill by Congress against Iran

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama vowed to veto any new bill by Congress to impose new sanctions against Iran, and urged lawmakers to provide the time and space the US needs to continue ongoing nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic.

In his State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, the US president said that Afghan war is near to end after 12 years, adding that the central Al Qaeda leadership has been defeated but threat still remains there.

Obama said that US troops that remain in Afghanistan beyond 2014 will only train Afghan forces and carry out counter terror operations against Al-Qaeda and other extremists. He said that 60,000 troops have been withdrawn from the country.

The US president further said that the opposition in Syria will be provided assistance to eliminate terrorism.
