Nuclear Security Summit 2014 begins in Hague

AMSTERDAM: A two-day Nuclear Security Summit will begin in The Hague on Monday, aimed at promoting nuclear security through voluntary national actions and international cooperation.

Earlier last night, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif accompanied by his special assistant Syed Tariq Fatimi and foreign secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry reached Amsterdam to represent Pakistan in summit.

The prime minister will address the summit and enumerate measures implemented by Pakistan to ensure safety and security of its nuclear facilities and materials.

Sharif will be one of the keynote speakers at a meeting on the future of the Nuclear Security Summit process the next day.

In line with Pakistan’s commitment to bridging the country’s energy deficit, the prime minister will also seek non-discriminatory access for Pakistan to nuclear technology for peaceful uses, including nuclear power generation.

The third Nuclear Security Summit will be attended by leaders from 53 countries and the United Nations, European Union, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Interpol.
