NP threatens to quit coalition govt in Balochistan over missing persons issue

ISLAMABAD: The National Party (NP), a coalition partner of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) in Balochistan government, has threatened to quit the provincial government over the issue of missing persons.

In a meeting held with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sideline of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Islamabad on Tuesday, the acting President NP Mir Hasil Bizenjo discussed the issue of missing persons in Balochistan and ways to bring peace in the province.

During the meeting, the NP acting president expressed his helplessness in the recovery of missing persons, saying that his party has acquired the government in Balochistan but not powers.

The NP acting president said that it will be hard for the party to continue being part of the ruling coalition in the province despite non-recovery of missing persons as ordered by the Supreme Court.

Bizenjo said that this is a serious issue and that the NP will have to quit the alliance if missing persons are not recovered.

Earlier in the day, the apex court issued its interim order in the missing persons case and ordered the government to produce all the 35 missing persons before it in seven days.

The apex court also directed the federal government to legislate in order to curb enforced disappearances.
