SEOUL: North Korea on Tuesday threatened to cancel the ceasefire signed in 1953 that brought a three-year conflict with rival South Korea to an end if the South and the US continue with an ongoing military drills.

The Korean People’s Army Supreme Command spokesman issued the statement on Tuesday, according to the state KCNA news agency. Pyongyang warned it will cancel the Korean War ceasefire agreement on March 11 if the drills are not halted.

Pyongyang has already warned of destruction of the South if it goes ahead with the military exercises with the United States.

The announcement from Pyongyang comes as South Korean and US troops launched their annual joint military drills on Friday. Some 10,000 US troops and 200,000 South Korean soldiers are currently taking part in the exercises.

A top US military commander in South Korea had already been warned by North Korea that if they went ahead with scheduled military drills aimed at deterring Pyongyang’s military provocations, his forces would meet a miserable destruction.

The North and South are still technically at war after the 1950-53 civil war ended in a truce rather than a treaty.
