Newly-elected Senators to take oath on Thursday

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The newly-elected Senators will take the oath of their office and election of the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson will take place during the Senate session on Thursday.

In this regard, the Secretary Senate has sent letters to the newly-elected Senators inviting them for oath-taking and subsequent election of the Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman.

The Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar will administer the oath to the newly-elected members of Senate, and he will also chair the proceedings for the office of new Chairman of the Upper House.

Ishaq Dar will resume his seat in the house immediately upon administering oath of the new Chairman. The new Senate Chairman will conduct the election of the Deputy Chairman and administer oath to him.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified the candidature of all 43 Senators elected on March 5 except for the four Senators who were earlier elected unopposed from Karachi, Raheela Magsi — whose candidature is currently the subject of a case before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) — and the four FATA Senators who have yet to be elected.

Meanwhile, in a luncheon meeting with the heads of major political parties in Islamabad on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif endorsed the nomination by opposition parties of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Mian Raza Rabbani as the new Chairman of the Senate.
