New Afghan President makes first foreign trip to China

BEIJING, China: The Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai arrived in the Chinese capital Beijing on Tuesday on a four-day official visit, making his first foreign trip since he was sworn in as the new Afghan president on September 29.

President Ghani is accompanied by a high-level Afghan government delegation and is expected to meet the Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders in Beijing.

The Afghan and Chinese leaders will also sign a number of agreements on bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The Afghan president will also meet with the Chinese and Afghan entrepreneurs and will visit the major installations and institutions of China during his four-day visit.

On October 31, the Afghan president will attend the Istanbul Conference, a gathering of regional countries around Afghanistan that discuss ways to promote Afghan national reconciliation and peaceful reconstruction.

The international meeting hosted by China is of great significance as it is the first time for China to host a major international meeting on Afghanistan and also the first such meeting since the formation of the new Afghan government.
