ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: As the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is under way in New York, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday left for the United States to attend the event.

This year, the session of the 193-member world body marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Organization, and it will witness the attendance of more than 160 leaders from across the world.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will address the UN General Assembly on September 30 during which according to the security advisor Sartaj Aziz, he will highlight issues of Kashmir, Indian interference in Pakistan and threat to strategic balance in South Asia.

“The Prime Minister is likely to address UN General Assembly on 30 September 2015,” the Foreign Office Spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said at his weekly media briefing in Islamabad on September 17.

“The visit program and speech of the Prime Minister are being finalized,” he added.

The prime minister will attend global leaders meeting on gender equality and women empowerment organized by China and UN women on the sidelines of the UNGA session.

Sharif will also address the plenary meeting of the General Assembly for adoption of the post-2015 Development Agenda.

Moreover, he will also attend receptions to be hosted separately by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the US President Barack Obama in honor of heads of states.

The prime minister will attend a peace summit co-hosted by Pakistan, the United States and the UN Secretary General.

In a separate meeting, Chief of the Air Staff also called on Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.
