Nawaz Sharif felicitates new Afghan leaders

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with the newly elected Afghan president Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday, and assured full Pakistan support for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.

In the conversation, the prime minister felicitated both the newly elected leaders and invited them to visit Pakistan.

The two rival presidential candidates signed a power-sharing deal a couple of days ago to end months of controversy over election result. Under the deal, a national unity government would be formed in Afghanistan.

It was decided under the deal that Ashraf Ghani would become the country’s president while Abdullah Abdullah would nominate a chief executive with powers similar to those of the prime minister.
