Nawaz Sharif asks UN to take steps for peaceful settlement of Kashmir issue

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of 69th UN General Assembly session in New York.

During the meeting, the prime minister said that Kashmir was one of the long-standing conflicts on the agenda of the UN Security Council and asked the UN Secretary General to take steps for its peaceful settlement in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The prime minister told that his government had sincerely embarked on negotiation process with India for peaceful resolution of all disputes. He expressed dismay over the cancellation of the foreign secretary-level talks by India which was setback to the dialogue process.

Sharif hoped that the Indian leadership would resume the dialogue process without any delay in the interest of peace and prosperity in the region.

Nawaz Sharif apprised the secretary general of his government’s current efforts to flush out terrorists and dismantle their networks. He said that the ongoing military operation against terrorists has disrupted their command and control system, he said.

The Pakistani premier said that the government had zero tolerance for terrorism and was determined to root out terrorist forces once and for all.

The two leaders welcomed the completion of electoral process in Afghanistan and the agreement over the appointment of the new President and Chief Executive. The prime minister expressed his readiness to work with the new government in Afghanistan for peace and development in the region.
