Nawaz seeks promotion of Pakistan-Iran ties

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday underlined the need for the promotion of ties with Iran, calling for increased interaction between the two countries.

During a meeting with the Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli in Islamabad on Tuesday, the prime minister stressed his government’s firm determination to improve ties with Iran.

The prime minister said that having comprehensive and bilateral ties with stable neighboring and regional countries remains a priority of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

The Iranian interior minister, for his part, pointed to the cultural, historical and religious commonalities between Tehran and Islamabad and described Pakistan as a friendly and brotherly country of Iran.

During the meeting, both officials said that the grounds must be prepared for the further enhancement of bilateral cooperation and interaction between the two countries.

The Pakistani premier and the Iranian interior minister also discussed border issues and security cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

Earlier, the Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan while addressing a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart after their meeting in Islamabad said that strong relations between Pakistan and Iran will guarantee peace and security in the region.

Nisar said that a strong Pakistan-Iran relation is need of the hour. He said that the present government wants relations between the two neighbors to be reflective of the aspirations of the two peoples.

The Pakistani interior minister said that strong Pakistan-Iran relations will go a long way in furthering the economic cooperation between the two countries.
