Pakistan was scheduled to host the peace talks between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban for the second successive time within a month on July 31 as per its commitment to support and facilitate an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process.

However, the talks were postponed at the request of the Afghan Taliban leadership after group’s Supreme Commander Mullah Muhammad Omar was confirmed dead.

But the two sides were urged by Pakistan as well as the United States to stay engaged in the process of peace talks in order to promote a lasting peace in the war-torn country.

The Taliban Supreme Council has announced to appoint Mullah Omar’s successor in next a couple of days, and it is hoped that the insurgent group would resume the dialogue process with the Afghan government.

During the meeting between the prime minister and the army chief, the two leaders also discussed overall security situation in the country with particular reference to the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb in the unstable tribal region.
