Pakistan, UK hope for increase in bilateral trade

LONDON: Pakistan and the United Kingdom have expressed confidence that their bilateral relations would see further enhancement especially in the area of trade and economy.

It came when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his British counterpart David Cameron held a meeting at 10-Downing Street in London on Saturday.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international situation including the current situation in the Middle East.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction that relations between the two countries have substantially strengthened in recent years.

The British prime minister while acknowledging the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate extremism and terrorism from its soil. He said that UK would continue to assist and extend cooperation to Pakistan in this regard.

On the occasion, Nawaz Sharif appreciated UK’s cooperation and assistance in the areas of security and counter-terrorism.

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Pakistan’s High Commissioner Syed Ibne Abbas were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, the prime minister represented Pakistan at a ceremony in London to mark the centenary of the Gallipohi campaign in World War One.

The ceremony was also attended by other world leaders including Turkey and Commonwealth countries. They laid floral wreath at the cenotaph in Whitehall.

The Gallipoli war was fought from April 1915 to January 1916 resulting in killing of 131,000 soldiers of the allied countries.

Nawaz Sharif reached London on Friday for a three-day official visit to the United Kingdom on the invitation of David Cameron.

During his stay in London, he is also expected to meet British leaders and business executives.
