HeadlinesNAB names ex-PM Ashraf as accused in RPP scam

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday nominated former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf as an accused in the Rental Power Projects (RPP) case as it filed a 263-page supplementary reference against him in the Rs22 billion scam.

The reference was filed at an anti-corruption court which will begin its hearing from November 19.

Ashraf has been accused of having received kickbacks and commission in the RPP deal when he was federal minister for water and power in 2008.

The NAB chairman Qamar Zaman Choudhry gave his approval late last month to file the reference against the former prime minister.

In March 2012, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had held the RPP contracts non-transparent and ordered that these be rescinded. The court had also ordered the then NAB chairman admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari to proceed with corruption references against those who were at the helm of affairs when the contracts were signed between 2006 and 2008 to overcome the energy shortfall through RPPs as a stopgap arrangement.
