Elections 2013NA unanimously passes resolution seeking to delay LB polls

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution urging the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to fix a practical date for holding of local bodies elections after putting in place all legal and administrative arrangements throughout the country.

The resolution moved by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Dr. Arif Alvi said the house is fully conscious of the imperative to hold local government elections in accordance with the Constitution.

It demands of the ECP to carry out its functions as stated in the constitution and hold elections in free‚ fair and transparent manner as soon as possible.

It was the second resolution passed by the lower house seeking to delay local bodies elections across the country. In the earlier resolution approved on November 7, it was stated that the recently announced schedule by the ECP of the local government elections was practically difficult to deliver free and fair elections.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Pakistan today rejected a petition by the ECP seeking a four month extension in conducting the local bodies elections.
