Musharraf`s name on ECL: SHC directs Musharraf to approach federal govt

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf to approach federal government in order to take the name off the Exit Control List (ECL).

A two-member of the provincial court comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto announced its ruling on Monday on a petition filed by Pervez Musharraf seeking removal of his name from the ECL.

The SHC in its ruling, directed the former military ruler to approach federal government in order to take the name off the ECL, observing that inclusion or exclusion of someone’s name on ECL does not fall within the court’s jurisdiction.

The counsel for Musharraf, A.Q. Halepoto, had requested the court to allow his client to go abroad to visit his ailing mother without permission of trial courts.

Musharraf, who remained under house arrest for more than six months in his sprawling Chak Shahzad farmhouse in Islamabad, has been granted bail in all cases against him and now he is facing trial for high treason.

A special court formed for the trial has summoned him on Dec 24 to begin high treason proceedings against a former military ruler first time in Pakistan’s history.
