Musharraf fails to appear before court in treason case

ISLAMABAD: The former President Pervez Musharraf failed to appear before the special court on Friday, while his counsel submitted a request seeking exemption for the former president from appearing before the court.

A three-member special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Yawar Ali formed to try Musharraf for high treason resumed the hearing in Islamabad on Friday.

During today’s proceedings, Musharraf’s lawyers filed requests in the court to not issue any directives before any decisions on their client’s plea for exemption and other miscellaneous petitions have been announced.

The lawyers said petitions were pending in relation to the court’s jurisdiction and the judges comprising the special court, adding that a decision should also be reached on whether Musharraf’s trial should be moved to a military court.

On January 31, the special court in its verdict on the medical report of the former president submitted by doctors of the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) where he is currently under treatment, rejected the request of Musharraf to leave the country and issued a bailable arrest warrant against him.

The court also ordered to produce Musharraf on February 7 before the court and directed Islamabad Police Inspector General to ensure the implementation of the verdict.

Musharraf was shifted to the AFIC in Rawalpindi last month after he suffered heart problem on his way to the special court to appear before it for the treason case.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
