KARACHI, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) would benefit from the Karachi operation as it is aimed at targeting criminal elements.
In his address at the cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Monday, Sharif said that reservations of any political party on the Karachi operation would be addressed.
His remarks came in the context of reservations of the MQM whose lawmakers earlier this month submitted their resignations from the Nation Assembly, the Senate and the Sindh Assembly as a protest against the Rangers-led operation in Karachi.
The MQM alleges that under the pretext of the Karachi operation, the party is being targeted and its members are being killed and detained in an extra-judicial manner.
The prime minister said that the Karachi operation was launched with the consensus of all political parties including the MQM, and it has been progressing successfully. He said that situation in Karachi is fast improving and the city will become peaceful soon.
Sharif said that the government has decided to take tough action against private militias. He said that a large number of culprits involved in terror and criminal activities have been arrested and they will be taken to task.
